If you know me, you know that I normally don’t like planning out which horror movies to watch. The reason being is that I rarely know what kind of film I’m going to be in the mood for when I sit down in the evening. If you knew that about me, you probably know that Christmas Horror Movies are my absolute favorite movies of all time. Watching a movie about the most wonderful time of the year where the content brings dread, fear, or disgust, is just fun to me. If you’re reading this, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you feel the same as I do. So, since Christmas Horror is my favorite genre, I’m going to go against character and provide a list of the top 25 Christmas Horror Movies that must be watched during this Christmas Season! This isn’t really in any kind of order, nor does the number of the listed item coincide with the day in December (Except for the movie at number 5… More on that below), but if that works for you, that’s cool.
Note:It’s December 1st, 2024… all the places I’ve mentioned under “Where to Watch” are subject to change, but apply now.
1. Black Christmas 1974 – Bob Clark, director of such iconic films as Porky’s (1981) and A Christmas Story (1983), gave us the granddaddy of all Christmas horror movies with Black Christmas from 1974. Starring Olivia Hussy and an inebriated Margot Kidder. A classic for this time of year, and arguably the first true slasher.
2. Santa’s Slay 2005 – One of the wildest Christmas movies in existence. This stars Bill Goldberg, who has apparently been given the reins (no pun intended) to act as nuts as possible. As a bonus, this probably has the most established actors in any of the movies on this list… but they are dispatched in a very bloody and violent way very early on. Amazing.
3. Terrifier 3 2024 – This is a brand new release, so in order to watch this one, you’ll have to shell out some cash to watch it. Much like the other films in this series, this is ultra-gory and violent… but it’s set at Christmas, so the chainsaw to the butthole just seems more festive.
4. The Killing Tree 2022 – The old “witch casts a spell on Christmas Eve to resurrect her husband, but it goes bad and he becomes a Christmas Tree” storyline, this one is absurd and hilarious.
5. Sint (Saint) 2010 – I mentioned above that it’d be a good idea to watch #5 on December 5th. The reason being is that Sint, a Dutch production, tells the story about Saint Nicholas. Not the Santa Claus that we here in the US are accustomed to, but Sinterklaas… a murderous bishop that kidnaps and punishes naughty children. This all happens on December 5th, or Krampusnacht.
6. To All a Goodnight 1980 – David Hess’ excellent Christmas Slasher seems to be a little underrated. It’s about a killer at an all-girls school doing his thing while most of the students are gone on break.
7. Violent Night 2022 – David Harbor as a killer viking Santa Claus, complete with a sledgehammer named Skull Crusher. Definitely a fun one to watch.
8. Jack Frost 1997 – I don’t know about you, but I’m a fan of movies where regularly inanimate objects get possessed by serial killers, a la Child’s Play. It just so happens that this time it’s a snowman that has come to life. Full of one liners, this is a comedy that’ll make you groan… in a good way. It’s low budget straight to video trash… but that’s what we love.
9. Silent Night Deadly Night 1984 – The greatest of all Christmas Horror movies, this classic was picketed, and banned in some places because of its depiction of a killer Santa. Filmed in the great state of Utah, at sites that I’ve personally visited, this one will make you clean up your act because we all know what’ll happen if you’ve been… NAUGHTY!
10. A Christmas Horror Story 2015 – This anthology film has become a classic around my house. The wraparound features a “toasted” William Shatner as a radio host. You’ll see Krampus fight Santa, evil elves, and a massacre at a mall.
11. There’s Something in the Barn 2023 – This is a fairly new movie, coming out last year, but it definitely deserves to be seen during the holidays. This is about an American family who moves to Norway. Naive of the culture and folklore, they run afoul of a pack of Julenisse (Small Santa-like Elves) who have taken up residence in their barn.
12. Silent Night 2012 – An all out blast of a movie. Not really a remake of Silent Night, Deadly Night at all, more of a totally different Killer Santa that torches the town.
13. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale 2010 – In Finland a company from the US and GBR are digging into the earth, when they make a crazy discovery. they find a Santa/Krampus being complete with a bunch of “elves”. You have to see it to believe where this movie ends up…
14. Better Watch Out 2016 – If you haven’t already seen this, go into it knowing as little about the plot as you can. How much can go wrong babysitting a 12 year old at Christmas time?
15. Black Christmas 2006 – In the mid 2000’s creating and releasing awful remakes of classic movies was the norm. However, this remake stood out. It changed the story just enough to make it unique.
16. Christmas Bloody Christmas 2022 – This is a tough one for me to recommend. The plot is about a mechanical lifesized (bigger than life, actually) Santa going haywire and going on a killing spree. That is the awesome part. The bad part is the unbearable dialog that Joe Begos wrote for some of the insufferable characters in the beginning of the movie. We’re subjected to that for the first act of the movie, and it’s difficult to get through, for me. However, if you can make it past that, the Santa carnage is great.
17. Silent Night Deadly Night 2 1987 – The only reason I didn’t put Silent Night Deadly Night on the 24th, is because you have to see this sequel as well. If you are following by days, you’ve had time so that you won’t be bored by the near complete retelling of that movie in the first act of this one. This is fun, quirky, and just nuts.
18. Christmas Evil 1980 – The story of Fiona Apple’s Dad. A man who has a pure heart, if not a ton of mental illness. Watch as the weight of the world takes a good man and makes him evil… on Christmas. Get it? Christmas Evil.
19. The Mean One 2022 – This is a fun little slasher where “The Mean One” is played by the actor who is best known for playing Art the Clown in the Terrifier series.
20. Advent Calendar 2021 – This French film is about a young paraplegic woman who gets her hands on a strange and beautiful advent calendar. With each day some wild, strange, or dangerous adventure awaits her as she opens the days on the calendar.
21. Don’t Open Till Christmas 1984 – The sleaziest of all the movies on this list, Edmund Purdom (Pieces) directs and stars in this one all about a killer who takes out those dressed as Santa Claus.
22. Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys 2004 – I love everything about Full Moon and Charles Band. This low budget masterpiece stars Corey Feldman and Vanessa Angel.
23. Krampus 2015 – This Christmas classic is all about the titular beast from German Folklore. Written and directed by Michael Doherty, known in horror circles for writing and directing Trick r’ Treat from 2007, this one has a PG-13 rating and is fun for the whole family!
24. Day of the Beast 1995 – If you’re familiar with Alex de la Inglesia, you know every one of his movies are quirky and wild. This is no exception. It’s about a priest who is on a sinning spree so he can become evil enough to be able to get close to and destroy the Antichrist that is going to be born on Christmas Eve in Madrid.
25. Gremlins 1984 – If you are going day by day on this, you’ll land on this one on Christmas Day. Gremlins is a fun one that you can will be fun to watch with the family after all the presents are open… that is, of course, if your kids won’t freak out at a gremlin getting blown up in a microwave.
